Carl Davis: Chains Of the Past

Among the pieces on display in the Cultural Awareness Center were signs and artwork representing segregation and the Jim Crow laws of the South.

A program flier for the wildly popular 1920's radio show: Amos ā€™nā€™ Andy. Both actors wore black face and crudely portrayed their black characters in a stereotypically offensive manner.

A sign indicative of Jim Crow laws and segregation.

The advertisement for "DARKIE" toothpaste originally came with a popsicle-like handle that could be placed in front of the caricature.

Cover artwork for the children's book, "Little Black Sambo." After its publication, the word 'Sambo' was deemed a racial slur in some countries. The book itself has undergone significant revision since its original publication.
